From within her body swelled an unfamiliar craving, one so agonizing that she struggled to breathe.

A fierce beast lurked inside her. One that, at any moment, was about to bare its fangs, and an unfathomable fear surged through her—

“Congratulations, Luna. Your child will become the lion that ruins the Sacred Silverwater Sea.”

Luna woke to despair. She was in bed in her room within the research tower of the Institute of Mythical Beasts. A man in white robes stood in front of her. His face seemed young, but he had an ashy complexion devoid of life. He reminded her of a moving corpse.

He was Luna’s grandfather, Dominic Atzenon, Chief of the Institute of Mythical Beasts.

“Grandfather...?” said Luna. “What happened...?”

“Hmm?” Dominic said absently. He observed Luna with the same detachment with which he would observe a laboratory animal. “I thought you were conscious, but I guess not.”

He spoke as if she weren’t there.

“Did I collapse outside...?”

“Rejoice, Luna. Your menarche has come.”

“Menarche?” Luna beamed. Now she was ready to give birth to children. That meant she was one step closer to her dream. “Is that true, grandfather?!”

“Yes. It’s been a long time...but success has finally arrived. You will give birth to Atzenon’s Lions of Ruin. It is an auspicious day. I’m happy as well.”

But in contrast to Dominic’s good spirits, Luna’s face fell.

“Huh?”

Atzenon’s Lions of Ruin were the mythical beasts living at the bottom of the Chasm of Longing. They were called the kings of beasts, spurred by an overwhelming urge to destroy, and were considered the disaster that would ruin the Sacred Silverwater Sea. And they were named Atzenon after the family that discovered them.

“What do you mean by that?” she asked.

“What is there to be confused by? Our dearest wish has finally come true! We have finally regained the lost magic technology of the founder of the Atzenon family: the ability to incarnate a Lion of Ruin is now in our hands!” Dominic said enthusiastically.

“Atzenon’s Lions of Ruin live at the bottom of the Chasm of Longing, a place even I cannot reach,” he said, continuing. “And if the Lions of Ruins themselves cannot escape the chasm, is there anyone who can?”

It was almost like he was announcing his research results.

“That’s when I had a thought! Why not just make the chasm itself a womb? That way, Atzenon’s Lions of Ruins can be born into our world. This is most likely the truth behind the Abyssal Princess of Disaster mentioned in the ancient texts.”

With his corpse-like face and lifeless eyes, Dominic smiled.

“But one problem remained. How can a chasm be turned into a womb? And the answer was in your desire.”

Luna stared at her grandfather with a look of utter confusion.

“Your strong desire to give birth became a mythical beast. To be precise, it became the Phoenix of Conception. This beast has the power to turn your womb into the Chasm of Longing. In short, any child you give birth to will incarnate as one of Atzenon’s Lions of Ruin.
